How to Build a Better Every Day Carry (EDC)

As mentioned in my original How to Prep for the Unexpected post, I am determined to tighten up our emergency plans and supplies. So, in the interest of starting at the beginning and after being inspired by sites like everyday-carry  and everydaycarryblog,  as well as a couple of old posts by Kelly and Erik at Root Simple, I've decided to stick to my original plan of showing all of my before pictures (you know, before I beef everything up and look like I actually know what I'm doing).  So, let's start at the beginning...

What is an Every Day Carry (EDC)?

An Every Day Carry (EDC) is what one carries on their person every day, no matter what.  Some people, depending on their jobs, backgrounds or intensity of prepping, can have pretty extensive EDCs (think weaponry here).

What do I carry every single day?
  • Rings and watch
  • iPhone
  • Chapstick
  • Wallet
  • Keys
  • Bottle opener
  • Mini multi-tool.

My multi-tool is a Swiss Tech and contains 19 different tools.  I've been pretty happy with it and use it often at work (mostly to lend to others that need a screw driver).

How can I improve my EDC?

I carry my wallet in one back pocket, my phone in the other.  My keys, mulit-tool and bottle opener live on the carabiner with my keys which is always attached to my belt loop and pushed into my pocket (at least partially to help with the jangle).  Anything extra I add will most likely have to go with my keys as well, so the smaller and lighter, the better.  I think that if I add the following items, I'll be pretty set:
  • lighter/fire starter of some sort
  • mini flashlight
  • mini knife
  • mini whistle
  • maybe a keychain pill holder or two?

Remember, an EDC is ideally light and easy to carry daily, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be functional and helpful in the event of an emergency.

What's in your EDC?  What else do you think I should add to mine? Please share your thoughts in the comments below!

xoxo,
M
