A couple of years ago I jumped into blogging as an extension of our little urban farm and as a way to share what we had learned and learn from others through their blogs and websites. One of the first sites I found in my searching was
Food in Jars and I immediately fell in love with the site, the recipes and the ease with Marisa seemed to go about her canning (which was a completely new and scary idea to me at the time).
At about the same time, we began thinking about the possibility of canning some of our own jams, jellies and pickles but neither Tool Lady nor myself had ever canned anything before and, to the best of our knowledge, neither had anyone in our families. So we researched and we purchased books and we talked about recipes and I spent a lot of time on Marisa's site gleaning all of the knowledge I could from her. When we finally purchased all of the equipment
the very first jam I made and canned was Marisa's
Yellow Tomato & Basil Jam.
I was hooked. Hooked on canning and hooked on this recipe. It is by far my favorite jam to grow the ingredients for, make and eat. It has become a staple in our pantry and a crowd favorite when taken to parties and paired with cream cheese and some good crackers.
Needless to say, last year, when Marisa's book
Food in Jars was published, I snatched it up immediately and began canning from it. My favorites canned so far include Honeyed Apricots, Boozy Peaches and Vanilla-Rhubarb Jam and I'm thinking that, with our cooler, shorter summer than usual, her Pickled Green Tomato recipe will be used a lot in the coming months. Food in Jars, along side the Ball Book of Canning, has become my go-to book for all thing canning.
Given my love for Marisa's recipes and site,
I am very happy to report that she is generously
one of my (very lucky) readers!

Oohh! That's exciting! A canning book with different recipes is a wonderful thing. I get kinda tired of the Ball Blue Book sometimes. Please count me in!!
ReplyDeleteI made the watermelon jelly from her site. I love it. I have made tons of green cherry tomato dill pickles this year, but I used the Ball Canning recipe. My family *loves* them--proabably even better than regular ones. (I was overloaded with cherry tomatoes this year, and people were running when the saw me coming, so I decided to do something different with them.)
ReplyDeleteThanks for offering this!

ReplyDeleteI have been canning for years now starting with my great grandma on her wood stove when I could barely see into the pot and now I am teaching my teenage daughter! I love to try new recipes and see what others are canning in different parts of the country or world!!

ReplyDeletei love how the canning community is growing--thanks for sharing the love!
ReplyDeleteI love knowing the farmers who grew my food, and the people who made it. It means a lot to me to be able to actually speak to the person whose product I am buying. Plus, it's so much fresher!!

ReplyDeleteI am so looking forward to her next book as well.
ReplyDeleteStarted canning last year and I was lucky to have a friend show me the ropes. Love it!
ReplyDeleteFood In Jars is one of my favorite blogs! I haven't tried the recipe for Yellow Tomato and basil Jam, but now I want to. We try to buy local products as much as possible, and we grow vegetables, herbs, and some fruit (This year our tiny cherry tree produced enough cherries for a yummy pie!)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to check out the Food in Jars book!
ReplyDeleteThat is a nice book. There's something so satisfying about picking stuff off of your own (or a neighbor's) tree and making a nice batch of jam. It feels vaguely like sticking it to the man, making it rather than buying it at the store.
ReplyDeleteLocal foods are important to me because I can pick from the tree and can it. You can't get much fresher then that.
ReplyDeleteI would love love love this book!

ReplyDeleteFood in Jars is one of my favorite blogs! I just made her Lazy Peach Preserves yesterday and tonight I am making Tomato Jam. She definitely helped take the fear out of canning for me. And her blog led me to yours, which I'm also enjoying very much! DevanFolts@gmail.com
