Reuniting Kids w/ Nature - Self Appreciation Caterpillars

MATERIALS:
Construction paper (different colors), scissors, glue or a stapler, markers or crayons

TIME FRAME:
15 - 60 minutes

PROCEDURE:
  1. Begin by cutting out several circles of the same size  (8-10 is a good start) from different colors of construction paper
  2. Next, think about the qualities in yourself that you like about yourself (Do you have a fun laugh?  Are you good at Math?  Are you a caring friend?) and write down one quality on each circle
  3. Once you have completed all but one circle, begin attaching them together, end to end, so it looks like a caterpillar.
  4. Use your final circle to draw a little face on and attach it as well for your caterpillars head.  You can also cut out and attach little antenna if you like as well.

REFLECTION:
How did it feel to think about your positive qualities?  Was it easier than you thought it might be or harder?  When you think about your friends, family and pets, which of their qualities do you think of first?  Which of your qualities do you think the people (and pets) around you appreciate most?

CONNECTIONS:
Did you know that most people have a hard time pointing out their positive attributes, but can easily list their flaws?  It is important that we remember how unique and special we each are so we can be reminder how worthy we are of being treated well.  When we are treated well, we in turn, treat others well!

TIPS:
  • Think about what you appreciate about nature, your pets, your family members or your neighborhood and create a community of Appreciation Caterpillars!
  • When cutting out your circles, cut them as close to the edge of the paper as possible so the unused pieces can be used for other  projects.

This activity is part of a series of low cost, hands on activities that can be used by anyone who has a passion for nature and who believes that a child's time spent in nature is not only important, but necessary.  Each activity was either created by me or gathered from a variety of sources.  You can find the complete list of all of the activities on my Nature Activities tab.
