As the Program Manager for a very intentional, very busy Summer Camp, I am constantly looking for new ways to show our Facilitators how much we appreciate all of the work they do with our campers. Luckily, we have established a few "old stand-bys" that seem to find their way into the fold each year regardless of what else gets brought in.
The Survival Kit is, honestly, one of my favorites. It's simple, fun and very affordable to create...especially when making them for ~20 staff! All you have to do is buy or gather together all the "ingredients" and put it together.
- Survival Kit label
- rubber band
- stick of gum
- piece of string
- match
- bandaid/bandage
- tootsie roll
- eraser
- snickers bar (the snack size works perfectly)
- sandwich bag (or container of your choice)
Take all of the ingredients and the label and place them in a bag. Then, sit back and enjoy the responses you'll get :-)
Now, I can't take credit for the creation of this kit (I came across it at a training years and years ago), but I do enjoy giving it away to our Facilitators at the end of the first week of camp (you know, when everyone is exhausted and feeling a little raw). This year, in addition to the kit itself, I also included a group photo of all us taken at the end of training (with the above note printed on the back of the photo) as a little reminder that we really are a big team and support can be found in all of us, individually and as a group.
Also, while this kit makes a great gift for staff members, teachers, counselors, etc., it could easily be given to someone who just might need a little pick-me-up (a graduate going off the college, a friend going through a rough time, etc)! You could even make it "fancy" by giving it it's own box or special bag and by embellishing the label a bit! However you use it, know that it is the thought that counts!
