Harvest Monday

Happy Monday everyone!

I opted out of this little party last week because 1) We had lots in the fridge to eat and 2) There really wasn't a ton in the garden to harvest!  But, no worries, I'm back now ;-)  Still inching towards my self-created goal of meeting the 200 pound mark this year...but just barely!  With 4 more Mondays to go, I'm not so sure anymore that I'll get there.  Which is OK, really, since I chose 200 as an arbitrary number at the height of summer when I was feeling very positive about the volume of food coming out of the garden.

Things are growing , they're just growing very slowly.

This week we harvested some greens.  I know, I know, not very exciting, but hey, it's still a harvest, right?!  I would have harvested more if there weren't a creature in one of the wagons munching away on my beautiful kale.  I'm thinking it's a mouse.  He may be hungry, but he's officially on my shit list now.

Something's been munching on my kale!

Mixed lettuce from one of the exposed beds.
It freezes every night and then perks up throughout the day :-)

Love, on a leaf of lettuce.  Hope in the garden.

Weeks like the last few, when the days are crisp and the nights are just cold, when there's almost nothing coming out of the garden, I am very grateful for the winter squash in the pantry and the frozen beans in the garage.

This weeks totals:

Kale = 1 ounce
Spinach = 1 ounce
Lettuce = 1 ounces

TOTAL OF 3 ounces this week.

  1. Bee Girl you are at least still getting something from the garden. All I can do now is eat what I have squirreled away.

  2. I think your garden is trying to send you a message on that lettuce leaf!

  3. Any harvest is a good harvest I say. I was inspecting my pots a little while ago and things are looking very reluctant :-(

  4. Your kale looks like mine - except I'm blaming slugs & snails. Your lettuce varieties look great.

  6. 1305 eggs, that's a lot of eggs, congratulations! Probably cabbage worm munching on your kale. Some of mine looked like that too and I found cabbage worms. Nice collection of lettuce.

  7. Norma - Thanks! It's been a lot of fun tracking the eggs coming in the door :-) Cabbage worms, ha? Maybe that's what it is!!! Do you know any tricks to get rid of them?

  8. Your poor kale! :( Hey, I'm jealous of your greens. I didn't get to plant a fall garden because I was just getting my new garden beds in place. Looks great.

  9. Hi Lynn! Still not sure what's eating it, but I'm hoping the cold will do away with it (it's supposed to hit -2 tonight) but the kale will survive! No worries about not having greens right now, you've set your foundation and can plan for next year! ;-)
