About Us

Welcome!

I’m Melissa, also known as Bee Girl, and I’m so glad you’ve found my space!

As we all do, I wear many hats, among them being that of a Mom and a Partner.  I am also an Urban Farmer (when not working my day job as a Program Manager for an educational, girl-centered non-profit), a Peace Keeper (while doing my best to keep my cool) and an Educator/Continuous Learner (when not watching crap TV or being sucked into Internet Land).

I love the feel of the dirt on my hands, the taste of a straight-off-the-vine tomato and the smell of fresh lemon balm.  I love hot tea (black, with milk and honey), homemade ice cream and poetry.  I also love tattoos, music (especially if it includes a guitar and/or has a bit of metal to it) and Jameson on the rocks.  I have a passion for the environment and our place within it…I also really like shiny new things and to grab a to-go beverage from our neighborhood coffee shop (and...um...that Bucks of the Star place, too) more often than is necessary.  I am learning to find balance.

I share my journey with my beautiful life partner, Kim (also known as Tool Lady) and my phenomenal 18 year old daughter, Cait (also known as Fish Girl).

Tool Lady plays the role of the Doer.  She loves tools and loves to use them on a regular basis, so she builds our raised beds and Chicken Mansions, fixes the Doggie Door and installs light fixtures while I assist.  She also hunts down all the great craigslist deals you might read about from time to time.  She is my partner in everything and I am so blessed to love her!

Fish Girl plays the role of Food Advocate among her peers, enlightening her friends and classmates by sharing her food and sharing our stories.  Did you know that most teens have never heard of, let alone eaten, a Kale Chip, a Lemon Cucumber or a fresh egg? Yep.  Enter Fish Girl ;-)

In addition, Tool Lady and I are expecting our first child together! For now, our Little One will be known in this space as Sprout. Sprout will surely bring some excitement into our lives and into this space!

We also share our space with 27 other creatures (2 dogs, 2 cats, 3 koi, 15 laying hens and 5 new chicks/almost-pullets) alongside a top bar hive of soon-to-be-replaced honey bees on 1/8 acre right smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood in the middle of town.

Thanks to the creativity of those who came before me, and the support of my wonderful family, in my copious free time (you know, when I'm not working, gardening or DIYing), I am also a writer, painter and crochet-er.  You can find a few of my paintings, 3D pieces and yarn work in my Etsy shop, which I opened in the fall of 2011.

I began Sky Minded & Ever Growing in February of 2011 as a way of documenting the twists and turns of our journey from full on consumerism to a life that is a little more productive...veggies, fruit trees, chickens and bees in an itty bitty space...preserving, cooking from scratch, trying new things, working more than resting.  We have a lot to learn, but are happy for the journey.

Never did I imagine that, in the process of writing in this space I’d have the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful people across this small globe of ours!  I believe that we are all capable of achieving amazing things, even with limited resources, time and energy.  Please know that I am in awe of each and every one of you.

So, let's please stay in touch!  You can find me at any (or all) of the below spaces!

Or, if you’d like to ask me a question or start a conversation that doesn’t exist for all to see, please feel free to email me at trinityvision3(at)gmail(dot)com

Happy growing!

xoxo,

M
